The boys and I are going to build a computer. It will be Kyle's computer, but it'll be a leaning experience for all of us. Down in the basement I have the tower of our turn-of-the-century model, and I've started getting together my parts list. If anyone has any comments or suggestions for the parts list, please feel free -- this is unchartered waters for me, and guidance would be appreciated.

motherboard

processor

memory

hard drive

I'm trying to figure out if the motherboard listed has the video card attached. The description of the motherboard reads: "Chipset: Intel 945G Express Chipset. Audio: 6-channel (5.1) audio subsystem with three analog audio outputs using the Sigmatel 9220 audio codec. Video: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 onboard graphics subsystem."

So, does that mean that those chipsets are what the motherboard supports, or what's already on there?

That's what is already on there. Most modern motherboards have onboard video and sound these days, and unless you're a serious computer games player it will probably be enough to use those.

Nod. It should be there, and I recognize the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950. I just haven't been able to find a picture of the board that showed a VGA or DVI port, or find an interface listing in the descriptions. (I've only hit 2-3 sites so far, though.) Newegg.com doesn't have that board (or at least, not by that identifier)... I mention Newegg only because they're one of the sites I know that's all-but guaranteed to show the back-end of the system board.

thanks, guys. I won't have the money for about another 4 weeks or so. I will document the process.

I have the tower of our turn-of-the-century model,

That's the first time I've ever heard this phrase used to apply to electronic computers. It sure doesn't *feel* like we're in a new century, does it?
