Mike called me Saturday morning to tell me that he's definitely not getting any financial aid for his flying hours. This is a huge deal. He has about four semesters to go, and the total that wouldn't be covered comes to about $20,000. There's no way that we can come up with an extra $5000/semester. He'll finish up his Private License and come home after this semester.

I feel so angry and betrayed by the system. The only reason he went for this degree is that he was assured that all of his expenses would be covered.

Today, I need to get together about 6 power point slides for a team presentation in Human Nutrition tomorrow, and work on my HN report on Prader-Willie Syndrome. And I've got a bunch of reading for the China course - I'm writing a paper on the Autumn and Spring Annals - hmm, what else... I missed my English class on Friday, and lots of reading to do there, and I'm waiting for my Psych books to come in.

So, moving on, just moving on, I guess.

Well, crap.

Any chance of grants or fellowships?

The scholarships and such will pay for tuition and books, which he already has covered. What is not covered by any program is the cost of the flight instructor and the fuel. When we looked into this at the beginning, the MI Nat'l Guard assured us that his degree was completely covered, and all of the tuition is indeed covered. But the cost of tuition is only a fraction of the cost of the degree. Each flight hour costs about $125 for the fuel and the instructor. Mike has about 175 flight hours to go.

Also, any grants he receives are first applied to his state and federal financial aid; so, when he got an $1800 scholarship this fall, the state withdrew $1800 of financial aid.

He is going to apply for additional scholarships, but trying to get some $4000 per semester in scholarships and then $2000 in loans is a long shot.

That sucks. If he wanted to go back later when he has the money, would all of his current credits count?

Yes, and that's the game plan. I'm one semester away from a BS in Psych, and I'll have either my RN certificate or my BSN by spring '09. Then he'll go back -- unless he's so pissed off or has changed course or a number of other non-insignificant variables.

Bleh.
