Ok, Kyle and I are going to try it again. We both know each other better, he's matured over the last year, and his head is on a little straighter. Also, I'm a little better at the schedule stuff.

We're starting with algebra and chemistry, and then something that I think of as a mixture of history, sociology, government, psychology and english.

For the third part I said that I wanted him to pick out something that he wanted to study, something that he was curious about but didn't know to much about -- a blank spot, eh? I'm very curious to see what he'll pick.

Sometime during the conversation, I said, "Well son-of-mine..." a phrase that I use toward my blood-sons, but I've never used it toward Kyle. He got the most amazing smile on his face, a smile that surprised him and that he tried to hide. But too late!

I'm not blindly optimistic about this, but I am hopeful. I know that there will be times when I'll be pulling my hair out in frustration.

But it'll be worth it.

Where on earth do you find the energy, Lisa - not to mention the time?

In the mom-gland, I think. Among other things, I've read that mothers function better on less sleep than anyone else, including single fathers. I think it's one of those "You just HAVE to" things, like amputating your own arm with a pen-knife when you're stuck on a mountain.

I was trying to think of an example not culled directly from my personal or observed experiences of motherhood.

It was hard.
