Tomorrow, Len will talk with the Staples to ask if they are willing to help us get the loan for the building. They are very conservetive, so I'm not putting much hope on it. I don't think that we'll get the place without a partner. Mike and my credit ratings are not that good, and Len & Laura, and Ruby & Lucas simply have no credit history. Our next chance is to look for an investor who would be willing to either buy the building and sell it to us on a land contract, or who will come in as a partner.

Knowing from the start what our chances are of getting the place, I've tried not to be too optimistic, but I can't seem to help myself.

My grandmother tells a story about me. When I was about four years old, we had a parakeet named Perky. Well, one day, Perky was feet up in the cage, stone dead. Of course, all of us girls where very upset. We had a funeral for Perky, and buried him out in the back yard. Now, Grandma had told me that, if I prayed very hard and was a very good girl, God would answer my prayers. So, with great will, I began to pray for Perky. After three days of hopeful prayer, I dug up the grave, expecting him to be alive. Grandma came upon me, little garden shovel in my hand, kneeling over the grave and puking. Perky was really, very dead.

What Grandma didn't tell me, what I didn't understand until many years later, was that when God answers your prayers, sometimes the answer is "no." But, still, I can't seem to help thinking that, if I pray very hard and am very good, my dreams will come to life.
