Dec. 8th, 2004 07:57 amWe got to the doctor's today for Len. That is, at least Laura and I will accompany him, with maybe Ruby, if she doesn't have to be at work. I wish that Lucas and Mike would come, too. We don't have a definitive diagnosis; this is what we're working toward. I say *we* because Len is so out of it now that he is barely involved in the process.
His symptoms include:
a skin rash on his head and face that might be eczema - big patches of dead skin, about the size of a dime, peel from his scalp, and smaller pieces from his beard. He also has rashes around his nose and lips.
near blindness in his left eye (or is it his right?) - can only see vague shapes with that eye
numbness in his hands and feet - to the point that he has done thing like gash his hand, and thrust a leather sewing awl through his finger, and not really felt it. He says that he really can't feel his feet - it's like walking on mush.
shakiness in the hands - comes and goes
skin on hands and feet are pastey-gray like - look kindof like clay
vertigo - he's on medication for this - with out the meds, he can't walk
extreme pain in his joints and muscles - this symptom most effects his quality of life. The pain is extreme, making it difficult to move and also difficult to interact with his family. The pain is worst in his legs, but there is no where that is not painful.
extreme feelings of being cold - especially in the feet and legs. Inability to sleep because of being cold. Has a weird feeling of being warm on the outside, but being cold on the inside - says that his bones feel cold.
fatigue - Is almost completely sedentary
memory loss - both long term and short term memory problems, sometimes very significant, similar to first stages of dementia
inability to concentrate - losses track of what he's saying, can't do math in his head (used to be able to), can't explain how to do something he knows how to do.
The doctor has said that she'll probably send him to Mayo Clinic. Len thinks that he has fibromialgia, but there are symptoms that don't jibe. He's getting worse, too.
I'm not sure of all the meds he's on - anexia, neurotin, and something for the vertigo. His doctors have just been treating the symptoms.
