options

Yesterday, Mike and I drove down to Bay de Noc Community College. I had forgotten to send the application fee when I mailed my paperwork last week. Fortunately, I also found out that there was a test that I was supposed to take, and I had the time to take it. The admissions folk were impressed with my scores, so that was cool too. I'm not sure if I'll make it in - there's room for 90, and there's over 300 applicants.

With the national nursing shortage, I don't see why there isn't more emphasis on educational opportunities. Seems a little crazy.

Depending on how things go with NMU (no word on that yet), and if I'm accepted at Bay, I'll have a couple of options. The pros for Bay are that I would be able to start the LPN program this fall, and be done by spring '08. I can go on and do the RN program the following year, while working as an LPN, and have my RN certificate by spring '09. The cons are that I'd have to drive to Escanaba four days a week (70 miles, one way).

If I win my appeal at NMU, I will probably be accepted into the RN program this October, and will be able to start taking nursing classes in the '08 winter semester. NMU is 15 miles from my house. I would graduate with a BSN in the spring of '10.

A third option is to do a little of both. If I get into Bay, I could do their LPN program, get a job next summer as an LPN, and then go somewhere else for my LPN-to-BSN degree. Or I could go down and live with Mike and try to get into the Physician's Assistant program at either Central Michigan, Grand Valley or Western Michigan.
