Christmas!
Dec. 25th, 2008 09:33 amBecause I am surrounded by people who cherish that extra lazy hour or three of morning laziness, all swathed in blankets and pillowy and warm, we celebrate our family Christmas on the evening of the 24th, after Christmas Dinner.
It was wonderful. There were glitches, of course: the turkey took longer to cook than I thought, but my sister was late, so it balanced out. We brined the turkey, and then rubbed the inner cavity with sage and rosemary and stuffed it with two cinnamon sticks and a couple of diced apples. It was one of the best turkeys I've ever tasted. The rest was standard fare - mashed white potatoes and gravy, baked sweets, a broccoli salad, homemade yeast rolls, savory rice ring with steamed green beans, and strawberry fluff. My sister brought three pies, but we were too full to eat them.
The gifts were well received. We opened them between verses of "A Visit from St. Nicholas" and the Christmas story from the second chapter of Luke.
We all gathered together in front of the tree for a group picture, and right after the shutter clicked, the tree fell down with a crash! We all stood there for a second in shock, and then I couldn't help but laugh. My sister was horrified! So I just kept laughing and we picked the poor thing up and Mike swept up the glass from a couple broken bulbs and we propped it in the corner. It's still like that, propped crooked against the chimney, it's star blinking merrily away.
