Overview of Requirements
The CAC-I certification is a progressive certification, designed to move individuals initially certified as a CAC-I to the CAC-II certification within four-years. During the initial two-year certification period the CAC-I will be required to take and pass the IC&RC/AODA exam in addition to meeting the other renewal requirements. During the second two-year certification period the CAC-I must complete the remaining requirements and apply for the CAC-II.
Experience - 3,000 hours full- or part-time counseling experience working with AODA clients.
Education - 135 contact hours of training specific or related to IC&RC/AODA Performance Domains and the Twelve Core Counseling Functions (refer to “Education” section for further explanation).
Supervised Practical Training - 150 hours of direct supervision specific to the counseling of AODA clients (with a minimum of 10 hours in each Core Function).
Testing and Review - Successful completion of the FSAC, FAODP or IC&RC/AODA examination
Code of Ethics- the Counselor Code of Ethics must be signed and submitted. A minimum of six (6) hours of MCBAP-approved AODA Counseling or Professional ethics training must be completed.
Residency - Must live or work within the State of Michigan fifty-one (51%) percent of the time.
Application - When all CAC-I standards have been met, submit your complete application to MCBAP for review. All documentation must be on copies of the forms provided and in the format specified in this manual to be applicable to this standard. All documentation is then submitted as an application packet to MCBAP for review.
Fee - Submit $150.00 non-refundable two-year certification fee (online application manual included.)
Initial Renewal - Documentation of a passing score on the IC&RC/AODA exam. Forty- (40) hours of approved continuing education training for a two (2) year certification or twenty (20) hours of approved continuing education training for a one (1) year certification, since the beginning of your previous certification period. Submission of the signed Code of Ethics, a non-refundable fee of $125 for a two-year renewal OR $75 for a one-year renewal and an additional $25 late fee if applying after the expiration date.
Certified Addiction Counselor CAC Level-II
Overview of Requirements
Applicants are not required to be certified as a CAC-I to apply for a CAC-II

Testing and Review - Successful completion of the IC&RC/AODA examination and the Case Presentation Method (CPM) oral evaluation
