I think that I fixed my car. It seems like it was the fusible links, like I expected. One of them wasn't making good enough contact. I had Fred turn the engine while I played with them, trying to figure out the weak one -- clamped it tighter with a needlenosed and pushed it back on the slot and voilà, running car. This helps balance out the fail with the battery.
