I had a talk with the special ed teacher at the boy's school. Sam is doing ok, but Carl isn't. He's been diagnosed with dyslexia, and they're thinking that there might be a concentration/organization problem, too. All of his teachers have emphasized what a good kid he is in class, how hard he tries, etc.

So, he's going to a directed studies teacher that's helping him with organizational skills, and they're going to start taking him out of class and reading his tests to him. Also, I'm going to get an extra set of books here at home, so that I can work with him.

What has me frustrated is that he's a bright kid with great ideas, but looking at his grades, you'd think that he was a little dim, or a space case.

When Carl was about 2 1/2 or three, Mike and I went out with the kids for a hike. There had been a big storm, and some trees had fallen. I remember the look of wonder in his face when he looked up at the still-standing trees, and the trees on the ground. "Trees...Fall!" he kept saying, "Mom! Mom! Trees....*fall*!" When he was 4, he walked sleepily in my bedroom and said that he couldn't sleep because "Sam's dreaming too loud." When he was 6, he said that he liked it when the 150 yr old pine on our property talked to him.

All kids are cool in different ways. Right now, Carl is just on the edge of puberty, and I wonder what the next couple of years are going to bring. I feel confident that he'll find his way - I just pray that it won't be lugging along the baggage of thinking that he's in some way inferior.
