A letter sent to Terry Brooks
Apr. 2nd, 2004 12:34 pmHey Terry,
Okay, this is what happened: I got fired for eating something that was getting thrown away. No excuses - yep I ate a little breakfast sandwich from a box of an out-of-date Jimmy Dean breakfast biscuits.
Now, when I was questioned by the Loss Control associate, she wanted to me to 'fess up to stealing something, last Friday. I had no idea what she was talking about. She became quite annoyed that I would attempt to lie about my theft. I still had no idea what she was talking about. She finally had to say, "Did you eat anything that you didn't pay for?"
"Ah, yes," said I, "the Jimmy Dean sandwich out of the waste cart."
Then she said that I was fired for gross misconduct, theft.
"Let me get this straight," I said. "You're firing me for something that ten or fifteen people do every day? When the deli is throwing away chicken, folks will have a piece or two. When there is an extra slice of cheese cut, it's often eaten. When the bakery has an out of date cake, they cut it right there on the front counter, and folks come by and have a piece. When there's a spoiled cantaloupe in produce, they'll cut out the bad part and then slice up the remainder and eat it.
So, you're gonna fire me for something that is so common that it is committed daily, even hourly? And no one else is getting talked to?"
She just got a sour look on her face and said that she'd have to "check into that," and that, yes indeedy, I was fired.
After I left the store, I was thinking about the implications of what I was said, and realized that I needed to warn you guys. There's a good chance that Loss Control will be placing hidden cameras all around the food area, to catch more thieves.
Beware. Don't eat anything. Warn the bakery and produce staff. I'm not sure, but I think that if you're fired for theft, that you're not eligible for unemployment benefits.
BTW, I got another job the next day. I'm doing ok. Feel free to print this out and/or forward it; I hate rumors.
Lisa
