(no subject)
Mar. 12th, 2008 12:43 pmI just got out of a great lecture in my theater class.
Paraphrased from my professor, Dr. Shelley Russell:
"The ancient Greeks would get together for a celebration of their society. Thousands and thousands would gather, and they would watch theater. Before the plays would begin, a priest would stand at the alter and sacrifice a young, white goat. The word "tragedy" means "goat song." The priest would stretch the neck of the goat across the alter, turning its head so that it could see the knife and they could look into each other's eyes.
The people understood that all of human existence was sung in that mournful cry of the goat; we are born to die, we are all the goat. But there's more to it than that. We are the goat ... and we are the priest. We are the knife."
"the readiness is all: since no man has aught of what he leaves, what is't to leave betimes?"
Hamlet, act V, scene II
On the way to school this morning, I was talking to Kyle, "Choices, it's all about choices. I show the world what kind of person I am through the choices that I make. But... what's more important ... I show myself who I am, I choose what kind of person I'm going to be. No one else has that power. I choose.
You choose; you are the one who gets to choose who you are."
