scouting for a garden
Dec. 31st, 2011 05:50 pmSince I live in a place that doesn't allow vegetable gardens, I'm currently scouting for a place to garden. Last year and the year before, we were granted some garden space from out friend Dawn. But Dawn has been trying to sell that house with no luck and it looks like it'll be repo'ed some time soon.
Mike and I (along with Luke, Aaron, and our dog Chi) just went out and stomped around a stretch of land under some Con Ed power lines - about a mile from the trailer court. I emailed Consumers Energy and asked them if it would be ok. I really hate asking because it's such a bother deciding what to do if they say no.
I've got a list of seeds that I'm getting from Bountiful Gardens and Orchard House Heirlooms:
Butter Beans -- I've not tried growing these, so we'll see how they do. I've also got some red beans, black beans and navy beans that I'll try. Maybe 6-8 plants each?
For root vegetables, we're going to grow round beets and long beets, rutabaga, carrots - four different kind, three kinds of onion, potatoes (I'll get some local organic reds, yukons and russets) and peanuts . We're also going to try sugar beets, to see how hard it is to make sugar. I'd also like to try scorzonera.
There's an interesting broccoli that I want to try - Early Purple Sprouting:

But I'm not sure if I'll grow it this year, since it has to winter. Or maybe if I start it in pots right away? I dunno.
We'll try growing broccoli, cabbage, chard, eggplant, and cucumbers, for pickling and this one which is actually a melon..
I want to try three kinds of watermelon and three kinds of musk melon. Also, pumpkin, summer squash, and winter squash.
Also, I want to grow luffa sponges. I never new that this was a gourd! And licorice sounds interesting, if I can get it to grow up here.
I want to grow both hot and sweet peppers, shelling peas and sugar pods, and five kinds of tomato.
I always go crazy on the planning. That's 22 types of vegetable, over 50 if you count the varieties, and about 10 lettuces that I haven't listed. I'll probably only grow a half of this, and then only half of it will fruit. But we'll see, hey?

Date: 2012-01-02 06:38 pm (UTC)There is an abandoned house right across from my trailer park with a huge back yard that hits messily against some tangled woods. I might try putting something back in there. Tomorrow, the city offices open and I'll try to find out who owns the property. Maybe we can make some kind of deal - I could keep it mowed or something.
