It's 5am, and I can't sleep. Well, I did fall asleep for awhile, at about 3am, but my dog woke me up at 4am, barking. I went down to see what she was about, because she isn't the barking-for-no-reason type of dog, and, looking outside, saw flames shooting up over the rooftops in the next block. I ran to call 911, and as they answered, I could hear the sirens.

I went back to bed; the fire department had it in hand and there wasn't anything that I could do, but I just couldn't get back to sleep. The bed didn't feel right without Mike in it. My surgery incisions made it just uncomfortable enough that no one position was just right. And I kept wondering about the house down the street - did everyone get out ok? How bad is it? Those poor folks, they could loose everything. From my window, I couldn't tell which house it was, but it looked like it was near Fred's house. Fred is a friend of Carl and Sam's. He has a little sister and brother, and his Mom and Dad both work at Walmart, so I know they don't have much.

And then I started thinking about our house loan, and my Mom's reluctance to sign off on the sale because of the extra that I want for the coffee shop. I think that they'll sign. What else are they going to do? I know for sure that they don't want to keep the house in their name. But they're going to drive me crazy while they worry and dither. Note to self: when I'm seventy years old and my grown children want to make financial leaps of faith, remember that they are adults, and heartily wish them good luck.

If Mike was home, I'd be asleep.
