I've been having trouble with insulin resistance and rising blood sugar. I've decided that I'm going to try the keto diet.

Yes, I realize that this is one of the new fads, and there are health risks, namely muscle loss -- with possible heart complications in extreme cases. I will watch my body closely and stop if I begin to show adverse reactions.

I'll be posting about this now and then. Let me know if you really don't want to hear about it, and I'll add a filter.

Could you please either add a filter, or put these posts behind cut tags?

I really really don't want to hear about it, but mostly because I would have a hard time not fussing over you and verbalizing worry, and that can be discouraging, and I don't want to be a source of discouragement. Thanks. ♥

I've heard of people having problems with Atkins but I've never quite understood it. I can only guess that there's some obsession going on - the kinds of people who try to move net carbs to 0 and stay there for days and weeks.

I don't think keto is a fad, per se. It has helped me sometimes. But I do think it needs body awareness and a sense of what you want. I don't think you're trying to get skinny - I think you're trying to feel better and get your sugars controlled, so I doubt you're in danger. But it does help to have a second! (Someone who is responsible for telling you "[personal profile] ljgeoff, you're sick - eat a piece of bread and drink a glass of milk"

I'm glad I gave a chuckle, but I also meant the advice. One thing about keto is, it takes a bit of time and effort to force the body into ketosis, so there's a tiny bit of "no, I won't eat a piece of bread to see if that's why I feel poorly; if it doesn't help, then I have to start over again!" And it's easy to accept one, or several, sufficiently slow growing problems because the change is slow, and you never have the sense that you feel unusually bad one day.

So if you have someone who loves you and observes you, to whom you give absolute authority to tell you to break ketosis, it might provide a safety valve against a slow downward spiral. Then, you can decide if they made the right call, and can discuss how to handle the next time, if there is one. It might not be necessary... but it might be.

Oh: I noticed when I go very low carb, my eyes get drier. Lubricant eye drops can be your friend!
