So, I feel very motivated to help a family from Ukraine come to the US as Protected Refugees. I signed up with a sponsorship organization called welcome.us
I put up my profile yesterday and there are already abouut 10 families asking for help. It's maddening. One family survived Mariupol, one family has taken in an orphan girl along with their four kids ("She is ours now," the mother writes), a father who wants to send his young wife and baby to safety. I am weeping.
I can't do this alone. I know that I can provide $100/wk to a family, but they'll need a lot more than that. The website says that I must be able to provide housing, all the furnishings and equipment; they'll be coming with not much more than the clothes on their backs, I think.
If I can get 40 people to help, we could easily support a family. I was thinking of trying for a pyramid - find three people who would find three people who would find three people - done. Forty people would only need to provide $25/wk, though we'd need at least $100 each to get the apartment and furnishings.
We would need to be prepared to support this family for 2 years, a total commitment of $1400 for the first year and $1300 for the second year.
I would be willing to do the paperwork; I would also be willing to completely give control of this project to whomever has the spoons to do it. A treasurer would be great.
I think that Marquette would be a great place for these families to come; it's beautiful and quiet, and the cost of living is low. We could get a 3 bedroom house for about $2K/mo.
Lets do this. We can do this. And no, it won't change the world - except for the one family that we'd be helping. It will change their world a lot.
